About Me
Born in Bucharest on December 30, 1963, I graduated from the Faculty of Finance and Accounting at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies (ASE). I enjoyed my work as an economist, and I can say I performed well in the profession—especially considering that, from the age of 36, I held executive roles, specifically as a financial director at large state-owned companies. Yet, despite a successful career, I always felt a sense of unfulfillment. Something was missing, though I didn’t know what. What was lacking was the satisfaction of creating things with my own hands.
I felt the urge to paint as early as childhood, yet an inexplicable fear kept me away from the canvas, while I satisfied my creative desire by knitting, doing needlepoint, or painting ceramics. However, in 2017, I finally gathered the courage to buy my first canvas and set of acrylic paints. Since then, I haven’t been able to stop painting—and I likely never will, as long as I can hold a brush or a palette knife.
It is said that one can discern a person’s character from their artistic works; therefore, I will not write about myself, but will let the works presented here speak for themselves.
About Textured Painting
Textured painting transforms a flat, two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional, vibrant, and multisensory one. Yet, the most fascinating aspect of textured painting is how its appearance shifts throughout the day. Raised elements, ridges, and layers of material create micro-shadows that change depending on the angle of the sun or artificial lighting. A piece that appears calm and subtle in the morning light can become dramatic and high-contrast in the afternoon. The combination of matte and glossy finishes makes light dance across the canvas, offering a constantly fresh visual experience.
Traditional art is meant solely for the eyes, whereas textures invite a much deeper connection. They encourage the viewer to touch the artwork and engage the sense of touch. Rough surfaces can convey intensity, energy, or drama, while smooth textures evoke tranquility and calm. The materiality of the piece imparts a sense of weight and depth. It also offers authenticity in a world saturated with mechanically produced prints and reproductions. With a textured work, there is no doubt about its authenticity; you know for certain it was created by an artist’s hand.
In my work, I have used texture paste and modeling paste, as well as pastes I developed myself after extensive testing and experimentation. Regarding technique, alongside brushes and palette knives, I have employed various instruments used in modeling and sculpting.
